Carmarthenshire County Council Group Repair Scheme

West Wales

The Group Repair Scheme involves carrying out improvements to private dwellings with the aid of council grants. We are currently part of a ten-year group repair programme, working in locations in Upper Brynamman that are termed 'Renewal Areas'. In Wales, improvements to such areas have been highly successful due to their positive impact on sustainability in the community.

Home owners partaking in the repair scheme might pay a maximum of 25% of the total value of work carried out, or nothing at all (depending on their financial situation). Oftentimes, private houses will receive environmental grants.

The streets we have been working on in Upper Brynamman are as follows: Mountain Road, New Road, Station Road and Hall Street. Besides repairs to streets, we are building new boundary walls, footpaths and improving general access with walkways and driveways.

Group repairs schemes in Renewal Areas not only ensure improvements to the houses themselves but also to social, economic and environmental conditions, which serves to restore confidence in areas that might previously have been considered problematic.

In many cases, this involves renewing the roof covering, structural repairs to the roof timbers, along with new fascias, rendering over insulation, soffit boards and rainwater goods. Often, uPVC windows and doors will replace existing ones.

The existing render is either hacked off and re-render, otherwise an over-render system is used. Structure repairs to existing walls by means of stitching are commonplace, as is the replacement of timber lintels with concrete.
