Fisherman's Cottages

Barry, South Wales

Acquired by our company in 1989, the Fisherman's Cottages' waterfront location, overlooking Barry Old Harbour, provided the Architect and Developer with an unusual opportunity.

Despite several constraints on the development -including a 1500mm main sewer running directly through the site; maintenance of views from behind the site; the construction of a coastal path along the rock face- the layout of the site was skilfully designed to reconcile any such issues.

Desirable features of the houses include corner windows that provide each house with a panoramic view or glimpse of the sea. The architectural vocabulary of the buildings utilise the simple -rendered walls painted white, dark-pitched roofs and dormers- to create a more complex, sophisticated whole, through careful articulation of the wall and roof planes and strong window patterns.

The Fisherman's Cottages won the Medal Award for Good Design in Housing, awarded by the Welsh Office, the Society of Architects in Wales (RIBA Wales Region) and the National House-Building Council. It also received the Medal Award Category 1 from the Welsh Housing Awards, who praised its 'admirable contribution' to the area.
