Maes Melyn

Cowbridge, South Wales

We were approached by a client to design and build a four-bedroom home in the prestigious west end of Cowbridge, a market town in the Vale of Glamorgan. The project entailed replacing a dated 1960s four-bedroom house, which also included a large flat roof area with a bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. The client wished to demolish the existing property to make space for a large, luxurious and contemporary four-bedroom house that had something of the 'wow factor' about it.

The list of requirements included: a luxury en-suite bathroom in each bedroom; a luxury bespoke kitchen and separate utility room; a grand open area with a first-floor gallery overlooking the spacious entrance area and open dining hall. Vitally, it would have to be a home that justified the plot space and prime location.

Following consultation with the client, and working closely with Nigel Arnold Architects of Penarth, a modern house was designed with walls of glass (to maximise the natural sunlight of the southern-facing plot), and a low-pitched zinc roof to add to the grandeur of the open space and internal gallery.

Given that Cowbridge is a conservation area, we had to take extra precautions in the demolition and site clearance of the old property. This also necessitated being sympathetic in the construction process, so as not to damage or endanger various on-site trees protected by the Tree Preservation Orders. It was decided that the project would be best served by embracing the tree motif, and making them a central feature of the plot; the dark colours of the leaves being offset against the whiteness of the house.

To maximise the internal space of the property, the building incorporated a low-pitched zinc roof, allowing for maximum height gain without being overbearing on the surrounding properties or the rest of the town. Consideration was given to the neighbours as the property is in close proximity to several others, as well as being on a busy main road. We kept them regularly updated on the project's progress, informing them of any large deliveries or noisy machinery that would be used.

Over the years, our company has built many houses and apartments; however, this building was the highest spec and most impressive new build we have undertaken, using a combination of building techniques we have acquired over the years. The result of our work now speaks for itself, with a modern looking home finished to the highest standard. Of its many bespoke features, it boasts a magnificent kitchen, en-suite bathrooms, an American White Oak staircase with glass balustrades and a glass entrance gate. Maes Melyn has truly become the talk of the town and one of our proudest projects in our recent history.
