Maesteg Social Centre

South Wales

The work carried out on the Maesteg Social Centre was considerable, not least in that it necessitated a full modernisation of the existing building. Inside, amongst the things we removed were the building's internal partition, sanitary goods, floor coverings and doors.

Externally, the removal process was equally thorough. All doors, screens, timber cladding, canopies and ramps were done away with. A new reinforced, insulated slab was constructed, as were new blockwork walls, with the addition of timber and steel work to the roof. The roof now has a warm covering with suncatcher skylights, aluminium rainwater goods and soffits.

The external walls were part-Western Red Cedar and part-Stolit render. All doors and screens were aluminium powder coated with double-glazed unit. Internal finishes included emulsion-rendered walls, carpeted and vinyl sheet floors, as well as suspended ceilings. Large demountable partitions were installed to add to the flexibility of the building's use.

Electrically, the building was fully rewired, alarmed and all necessary detectors installed. Mechanically, a new gas main was provided for a new radiator heating system, as well as a ventilation system throughout the building.

Externally, landscape areas were laid down, replete with shrubs. New tarmac car parks, bollards and fencing were also provided.

The project was completed within the required timeframe and very much to everybody's satisfaction.
