Old Hall

Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan

A large refurbishment contract, in one of the Vale of Glamorgan's most desirable towns. The renowned Edmondes family acquired the Hall in the mid-eighteenth century, and resided there until the 1920s. It was then used by Cowbridge Grammar School until the mid-1960s, when it was deemed unsafe. Our company was awarded the contract to convert the main building into offices for the Direct Labour Department of the Council, and to renovate the stables into flats.

The contract involved the demolition of the large parts of the rear of the building, which we then paved. The roof was stripped, structured timbers renewed and re-covered with Welsh slate. Some walls were left standing with the express intention of making them facades, in order to create a courtyard space.

The old stables were converted into six one- and two-bedroom flats, replete with kitchens, central heating and bathrooms. Internally, the building was fully refurbished and modernised with new ceilings and plasterboard throughout. Floors were either repaired or renewed.

A series of lecture and meeting rooms and a kitchen and cafeteria were also established - somewhat prudently, perhaps, considering the building is now a community college. The Old Hall also contains the town's library and Health Centre within the grounds.
